The New Year Soul Sarongs

You are approaching a
Power Portal. Shamans, alchemists and other magical creators, consider
the moments of break in time and space as Power Portals. Dawn and
dusk, for example, are daily Power Portals. Mountain peaks, the edge
or crevices in an abyss, thresholds and riverbanks are Power Portals.
As you reach these landmarks, the forms in the landscape break, becoming
something else. Whether a Power Portal is found in time or space, it
is powerful because it is a peak time/space event of transformation. The
year ending and the year beginning are a Power Portal for you.
These Holidays also
offer you a Great Cauldron. This spiritual phenomenon takes place
when mass consciousness focuses on a single thought or intention. There are
as many names for this phenomenon as there are spiritual disciplines, but
most religions, including the Old Religion of the Goddess, the Buddhists,
the Catholics, the Espiritista Latino traditions and the ancestral spiritual disciplines from the East, coincide in one
thing. When millions of minds and hearts simultaneously focus on similar
thoughts, emotions, wishes and moods, this convergence generates a
miraculous degree of power that can manifest the collective intention.
Shamans “ride” this
energy convergence as a “Power Horse” that takes them in the direction of
their dreams. They “cook” their alchemy at these moments, using the massive
concentration to manifest their transmutations.
These Holidays, then,
offer you a double opportunity. You are crossing the Power Portal
opened by the death of a year and the birth of another. You also have a
Great Cauldron in your hands, as billions of people turn their emotions
and thoughts towards the celebration of Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa,
Epiphany, the Three Kings and other ceremonies.
The question is what are
you going to do with this extraordinary opportunity?
The Spirit of Christmas
is love. The actions are giving and receiving.
The Spirit of New Year
is transformation. The actions are releasing and attracting.
After the gifts, in the
midst of the shopping, somewhere along the New Year toasts and hugs, what
can you do to make the approaching year truly new? How can you use this
magical threshold to enter into your dream?
Traditionally, people
try to do this by articulating New Year’s resolutions that are often
forgotten or carried out like a mission to fix what’s “wrong” with their
lives. You've probably tried it more than once. You've pushed yourself with
your mind, with willpower, creating additional stress in your life, until
you give your resolution up or it slowly dies a nameless death.
My years of walking the
Inward Journey and my experience helping others heal their Souls and
transform their lives have taught me that life is not a repair project. I
also know that pieces of your Soul are missing that you don’t even know
existed. They were stolen or broken long ago, and you walk around with the
hole or the break where they used to be, with a hunger to be whole again.
Your Soul hungers and you may not even know that you are famished. Knowing
this, how can I say that life is not a repair project?
Because that which has
been broken is also a Power Portal. Right there, in your Soul’s
crack, a new landscape is forming. Inside that emotional wound that cause
you pain, your
Personal Medicine pulsates with extraordinary powers.
There is an awkward tension between what you
want to be or know you can be, and what you have been or are today. Perhaps
you want
to be joyful and compassionate. Yet, your mind keeps constantly wandering to
old angry or sad memories. Whenever someone does not agree with your opinions,
you judge and reject them. When you look back and see your incongruence, you
feel awkward, fragmented, dissociated and false. Yet, in that awkward
tension between your Essence and your actions, you are Becoming.
That tension is a magical abyss. Standing in the edge, you face the
opportunity to change the landscape of your life. Dive into that tension,
and you can fly!
Perfection is not the
Way of Soul. Your Soul seeks, instead, to dive into the crevices of
pain, joy, fear and shortcomings. Like those green shoots that spring in the
cracks of cement and asphalt, your Soul breaks through tough obstacles,
hardened habits and asphyxiating limits by emerging through the cracks.
Again, you see, a break becomes a Power Portal.
Instead of a perfect
masterpiece, see the Way of Soul as a Vitral
―a
stained glass window. Every memory, emotion and experience
―whether
past, present, desired or expected―
is a color pane, a fragment of fragile glass that blends with others to form
the design of your life.
Who creates that design?
Is a strange, omnipotent God breaking you to create an arbitrary design with your
pieces? Are you the creator? Or are these glass shards haphazardly put
together by chaos? Are they bound together strongly? Or are they so poorly
combined that they fall when the wind of crisis blows, letting the cold storms of
confusion and anguish blast through you?
Your Soul is the mason
that welds and polishes the Vitral of your life. You, the choice
maker, and the choices you make, create the design
―a
work of art in constant progress. But what about circumstances that show up
in your life, and which are out of your control? It would seem that most of
the time life is happening to you. Yet you are also happening to life. You are an atom in the consciousness of
all life. The particle you are is holographic. It contains the whole.
Life is a dance between the universal you and the localized, personal you.
How the choice-maker, The Weaver within you, takes the threads of
circumstances and what she weaves with them, creates the design of your
life. Life brings to you the experiences that you need to
create the best design of your choice.
Sometimes, however, you may not be able
to perceive that opportunity as it is offered. Your Field of Perception has been
shaped by your Domestication. You may bump into a Wall of Perception
due to inherited beliefs and fears. Still, if you trust and use your
imagination and faith, you can create a Vitral, a patchwork that reflects your beauty, your passion and your purpose.
As a human being, you are
a creature that creates. Art is your greatest power. Your life is your
greatest work of art. The old alchemists and shamans took advantage of the
Power Portals and the Great Cauldron to manifest their desires
and dreams. Yes, but how did they do it? The medium of shamans are: energy,
intent, nature and art. A Medicine Woman creates a
sand painting that depicts the forces she intents to change. A shaman dances
to the rhythm of a drum while using a mask that embodies the power or the
enemy she is addressing. They are using the medium of art --from visual arts
to performance-- to make the invisible visible.
Once the invisible
"malady" is given a visible form and is made visible to the eye (to
perception), the shaman uses her intent to change the old energy patterns
into the desired energy patterns. To cook this transmutation, the shaman
uses Elemental Powers. The drum reproduces the vibratory frequencies of the
form. The shaman's breathe is the element of air, connecting the physical
and spiritual realms, as does El Humito, the Sacred Smoke. Water is
the Female Power. It is the realm of emotions, passion, desire,
fluidity, adaptability. It brings the intent into the River of Life,
moving the transmutation. Fire is the Male Power. It is the realm of
intention, will power, time and mind, melting the old forms to create the
new forms. Earth holds the form and localizes that form in space.
These powerful mysteries are part of the creative process. Art is the
catalytic agent of the alchemists.
These holidays you, too, can use
art as the medium to generate practical, tangible change in your life.
The Power Portal
presented by these Holidays allows you to create an alchemy that can
redesign the pieces in the design of your life, forming a beautiful,
Soul-nourishing pattern. You can mentally, emotionally and spiritually take
a patch of pain and transform it into a patch of Personal Power. You can
quite literally and physically take a broken piece of your Soul and
transform it into a collage that expresses and feeds the radiance of your
Soul. You can take any attitude, habit, belief or situation that has been
starving your Soul and transmute it into Soul nourishment.
To help you accomplish
this, I am offering you The Soul Sarongs, a Healing Metaphor.

Soul-starving aspects of your life. Once you recognize these aspects, you
embody them in the patches of a Soul-starving Sarong created with
fabric collage. There they are, right in front of you! These aspects
of your life have now become tangible and therefore, amenable to change. By
seeing these aspects or patches in the sarong you have created, you are able
to detach from them. Now you can use the creative process to transform them!

then allows you to transmute the patches of your Soul-starving Sarong
into beautiful, empowering patches that form your Soul-nurturing
Sarong. The tools I offer you in The Soul Sarongs Alchemical

your Female Powers and the actions, attitudes and situations that nurture
your Soul. I help you to transform each patch in your Soul-starving
Sarong into a patch that depicts your Soul-nurturing qualities. As you

limits into your own Personal Medicine. If you have been facing inner
obstacles, fears or old scripts that thwart your desire to accomplish what

About the Author
María Mar is a performer, writer, visual artist and shaman with more than 30
years of professional experience using art for personal growth and women's
empowerment. Maria is an artist-alchemist who integrates visual art,
literature and performance to create interactive art experiences that change
peoples' lives.
Maria's performance "Love that Kills" --about violence
against women-- was featured in PBS, Channel 13, in "The
Americas Series" (1992). Maria has been featured in New York/Newsday
Manhattan Profile and other media. She is well-known as a pioneer in the use
of theatre for the
prevention of violence in the family and against women. Her methodology of
Theatre of Transformation was featured in Puro Teatro: A Latina
Anthology, published by the University of Arizona Press in 2000.
Maria Mar combines her major in psychology from Fordham University and her
vast theatre experience to offer art as a healing adventure. She has worked
with institutions helping to empower women and to end violence in the
family, such as Violence Intervention Program, Steps to End Family
Violence and Roberto Clemente Family Guidance Clinic. She has
performed in colleges and art venues such as Penn State University,
Boricua College, Aaron Davis Hall, Puerto Rican Traveling
Theatre, Nuyorican Poets Cafe and Pepatian, among others.
She has been featured in numerous radio stations, such as WKCR, WADO and
WBAI. Maria Mar has worked with more than 70 organizations in the USA,
Puerto Rico and South Africa and was the executive director of a non-profit,
Ecuelecuá Interarts, for six years.
Maria has addressed women issues in the
United States, South Africa, Mexico and Puerto Rico, helping thousands of women
heal from violence and oppression. Maria Mar is now introducing

her unique process to awaken the Female Face of Power in women and their

Dr. Sheila Candelario
EOM: What adverse circumstances have you faced and how
have you created the life you want in spite of—or perhaps thanks to—these
circumstances?
Dr. Candelario: I have lived through many adversities
in my life. I consider that those I encountered during childhood were the
most damaging to my spirit. I experienced emotional neglect, mental and
sexual abuse by the age of five. I was a witness of domestic violence at
seven. Then I lost my father to murder at ten. Finally, I survived an
adolescence confined to the strict rules and iron fist of a conservative
family, which lead me to marry young and have my first child at
twenty-three. I endured a twenty-year marriage, the last ten years in
anti-depressants.
Throughout all these experiences, knowledge became my
refuge, my fort and my source of strength. My path was education, seeking
and acquiring the knowledge to guide me through life, evolving
intellectually, finding my self, my own voice. After I married, I kept
pursuing my higher education degrees and finished two masters and a
doctorate, with two children. My aim was total independence and
self-reliance, to trust my own voice, instincts and vision.
The knowledge I gained transcended the intellect. It
was also an inward journey in which perseverance and determination proved
essential in rebuilding my spirit, self image and confidence.
It was during my graduate years that I decided to work
with Central America and it was El Salvador that finally won my heart. I
dedicated the last eight years of my scholarship researching and writing
about their history, culture and struggles. I turned the violence in my past
into a crusade for human rights and justice. Writing was my guiding light.
Now, for the first time in my life I am living on my own, healthy, totally
independent and teaching students, mainly Latina women, to trust their
minds, intellect, vision, and to find, nurture and use their voice. I have a
sign in my office that says: “The worst enemy of freedom is silence.”
EOM:
How do you nurture yourself and your Soul, and what three elements have you
observed are key for a woman to be inwardly strong as she works to assert
her female power in society?
Dr. Candelario: I nurture myself by reading
literature and writing. Silence also nurtures me. One needs to be in total
quietness listening to the wisdom that comes from within in meditation or
prayer, and being connected with a higher being or energy. Long
conversations with true and wise friends or family members who sincerely
care for each other nurture me. Lending a hand, being an ear, encouraging
others, and hugs, nurture me as well. To pursue justice in everything I do,
nurtures my soul. (Click this link to hear and read the

Three elements that I think are key for women to be
inwardly strong and assert their womanhood in society:
IMAGINATION: You have to rebuild yourself from within.
Since childhood, as we are taught to acculturate and assimilate into a
family structure, educational institutions and society, we are given roles
to follow, a language to use and the symbols and metaphors which we are told
define us. We have to search and learn our own history as women and find the
truth behind what we are made to believe within patriarchal systems,
including institutional religions. We have to create our own language, our
own metaphors, our own symbols and construct ourselves from within. We have
to visualize and imagine who we truly are in order to transcend all that
holds us back.
SELF-KNOWLEDGE: The journey into self-knowledge has
multiple paths according to how you have imagined yourself and have traced
your reconstruction. My path was through education and writing literature,
others might be through art, music, humanitarianism, etc. What is essential
is that you listen to your own voice, that you find your true passion and
inspiration to guide you as you overcome obstacles in pursuit of your goals
and dreams.
WILL and HONESTY: Action is the opposite of fear.
Exercise your voice, your will to evolve with the utmost honesty and
sincerity. Throughout our lives, we have been paralyzed by intangible fears:
fear of failure, fear of loneliness, fear of not being good enough, fear of
disappointment, fear of rejection, etc. The list is infinite. These are
ghosts of insecurities. They are “maybes” that are not real. Face them with
incisive honesty. Acknowledge them. Find the source of that fear, unmask it
and transcend. Once we have imagined ourselves differently and are well into
the journey of self-knowledge and rebuilding, we have to start with
determination to take small steps in exercising our voice, our intuition and
our strength. Write in a journal your feelings, opinions, dreams; write
poetry; paint; find out the information needed to enroll in a class or
college; go visit the place where you would like to work or show your art
some day; speak to someone that has the information you need to set you in
the right direction. Remember that setbacks are just signals for
redirection. Like a compass, they point to us where we really need to go
next, our next step. Persevere, believe and trust that the universe wants
you to succeed, that everything is out there waiting for you to make it

EOM: How do you help women to manifest their Dreams,
and what could our readers do to celebrate and nurture their Dreams?
Dr. Candelario: As an educator I make sure my
students understand their history, where they come from, where they are and
where they determine themselves to be. We read women’s literature, all
genres and periods: essays, poetry, short stories and novels. Gerda Lerner’s
book The Creation of Patriarchy is a fundamental historical
analysis. I encourage them to manifest in writing their thoughts, emotions,
fears, struggles and victories. Poetry is empowering. Words that are
manifested either orally or in writing are inscribed in the universe. They
are given the breath of life. Inscribe your dreams in the universe. Allow
them to come alive through poetry, songs, letters, essays, reflections. Use
your voice, your will, envision your evolution and write about it. Celebrate
by reading your words out loud, to yourself, your most trusted friends, or
an “open mike” in a poetry club. Be a poet, your own creator.

Tanya Torres: Dr. Sheila Candelario is a writer,
educator and promoter of human rights. Her research has helped expose and
heal the atrocities of the war in El Salvador. Currently living in New York,
she has dedicated the last three years to helping Puerto Ricans and other
Latinos aspire to a better life through education. She is a writer whose
work focuses on women's lives and the ways in which we seek to heal our
souls from the outrages of patriarchy. Above all, Sheila Candelario is a
tender and loving soul who is always open to listening and helping those who
have the opportunity to get to know her.
About Tanya Torres: Tanya Torres was featured
as the Inspiring Woman of
Eye of the Moon's previous issue. She once again reveals her quality
by honoring another woman. Jose Martí said "Honrar, honra." (To honor
another honors you.) By honoring Dr. Sheila Candelario, Tanya is again

About Corazon Tierra
Corazon
Corazón Tierra
Corazón Tierra is a Puerto Rican
performer, writer, editor and personal growth artist with 12 years of
professional experience. Integrating theater, dance, singing and live music,
Corazón transforms her stories and poems into performances that bring to the
audience a healing experience. Audiences in the United States, South Africa
and Spain have experienced these interdisciplinary performances; a new
modality of theatre created by Corazón Tierra and María Mar, called
Theatre of Transformation.
A pioneer in editing and writing Spanish national magazines in the USA,
Corazón has provided Hispanic and Latino readers with a wealth of
alternative information. Millions of readers have enjoyed her feature
articles about culture, family, health and nutrition published in magazines
such as Healthy Kids en Español. She is also the former Associate Editor of
Ser Padres magazine and of VIVA (Daily News' bilingual magazine).
Corazón has written extensively about her experience of healing from
anorexia, publishing articles in magazines such as Latina Magazine. Her
performance piece about the subject, Goddess/dam Body (CuerpOdiosa),
was featured in television in Seville, Spain in 2002. Corazon now offers
another performance about the experience of being anorexic:
Unraveling Absence. She is also writing her novel
Almost Disappearing: Reclaiming the Territory of my Body.
Corazón created the
Beloved
BodySoul System to help women and young girls heal and prevent eating
and body image disorders. Corazon is
