During my years of shamanic training, I have experienced the power of the word countless times. I have used the power of the word to delete realities that are not congruent to my Essence. I have availed myself with the power of the word to invoke the reality of my dreams.

I recently encountered a teaching about words that revealed to me the destructive effects of Not-naming and the creative power of Naming in the creation of our reality.

What happens when realities that are beginning to take shape are not named with words?

The Story of Not-naming
The silence was not kind. It was the type of silence that stops the breath and accelerates the heartbeat. As I listened to my parents’ unspoken language, my body began to remember a feeling from my childhood. I felt inept and incompetent. I immediately sensed a strong impulse in my body. I wanted to make myself invisible, as I had done during my childhood and adolescence, until I had become anorexic.

I was sitting on the back seat of my parents’ car, as I often did when I was a child. My father was driving, his gaze lost somewhere on the road. My mother was holding a book in her hands. She tightened her jaw as she started to go through its pages. My guts began to stir up.

For the first time in my adult life, I was sharing with my parents a creative accomplishment. An excerpt from my writing about my experience of anorexia had been included in a book by experts in the field. I had told my parents that my writing was at the end of the book.

They said nothing. Daddy just looked at the book from a distance. Mom took the book in her hands with precaution, afraid of getting burned by my words. It didn’t surprise me that she chose to read aloud the passages that emphasized facts about nutrition, instead of going directly to my creative contribution in the book.

As usual, Daddy kept himself trapped in his own world, separated from us. Finally, my mother reached the last pages of the book.

“Oh, it’s true. Here is your byline,” she said, the surprised tone of her voice almost denying the affirmation.

As she read my writing, the turbulence in my stomach became a mass of amorphous energy extending beyond my physical body. Mom only spared a few words when she handed me back the book. Her lips pursed, the words made it out of her mouth in a whisper.

The amorphous energy protruding from my stomach was so heavy that I felt extremely fat. I realized that I was touching an old feeling from my childhood. It was the feeling of the Ugly Duckling.

“There are many people interested in reading my book because they read this fragment and they liked it. This means that they will buy my book when I publish it,” I said, in an attempt to assert myself.

“When? In ten years?” he said. The minute his words came out, I could see him trying to erase them.

He knew that his statement was not good parenting. In spite of this knowledge, the words had escaped―a psychic leak that revealed his habits of perception.

These were the same habits of perception I have inherited from my family, a deep belief that manifesting a Dream is impossible.

My Medicine
As I looked at my parents from the back seat, I brought my attention to my body. The energy that was swelling in my stomach was an unprocessed pain. This awful pain told me a story. It revealed why it’s been so difficult for me to make my gifts visible in the world.

That day, on the back seat of my parents’ car, I touched the emptiness left in me by the absence of Naming that existed in my family. My gifts and the potential of my Dreams were invisible in the midst of so many problems and crisis. As a child, I fiercely protected myself against this devastating silence. I learned to develop my talents and graces undercover, never sharing them with my parents or other people. In this way, I made sure that my faith and hope survive.

Years later, as I tried to bring my gifts into the world, I confronted a Defensive Shield that didn’t allow me to be visible. I had been keeping my gifts inside for so long that sharing them with the world seemed to threaten my own existence.

Today I invoke the power of my words to transmute that Defensive Shield. Naming the beauty of my gifts, I melt down this Defensive Shield into currents of creations that flow into the world.

The words in Naming hold so much power that they help to create the realities in which the named gifts can flourish. They are a blessing. Name yourself, your kindness, your beauty, your uniqueness. Name your children’s uniqueness. Celebrate their gifts with joy and wonder. Never overestimate the power of the words in Naming, for they are the bearers of whole universes.

Tanya: I am a visual artist and a poet. I use art and poetry as a way to heal myself and others. In my workshops I teach people how to make books as a tool for healing and for reserving a creative space in their lives.

EOM: What obstacle or crisis have you faced, and how did you overcome it?

Tanya: One obstacle I overcame was surviving cancer and stem-cell transplant. It was a difficult and long process that took place over three years. At that time, I dedicated myself to the three most important aspects of my life: my son, my health and my art. I left everything else, or at least stopped paying so much attention to other things, and painted, spent time with my child, and just concentrated on feeling good by doing art and poetry. When I felt safe again, I started sharing with people my story and teaching them the tools that helped me survive.
