Girls Excel
in the Mathematics of
Starvation
I remembered myself: a little girl meticulously counting each grain of rice. I was very good at mathematics. But no one knew that I had developed a secret mathematical specialty: counting calories. At 8 years of age, I knew the exact calories of all the foods I ate.
I remembered my mother's diets. She constantly tried to curb her love for food. She really didn't eat that much. But she deprived herself, only to pinch here and there later. I counted calories.
I saw the adult women around me obsessed with not eating, eating very little, depriving themselves of foods they wanted. But what I did not see frequently, were adult women intent on eating healthily.
No wonder that by the time I was 8 years old, I was already on my way to becoming anorexic. And you know what? No one noticed! They were obsessed, how could they see that I was becoming obsessed and that this was an early sign of anorexia?
I was already in college when I began to remember. It took me years to remember my childhood "secrets" --the secrets of the anorexic girl. During my Remembrance Journey, I created the Beloved BodySoul System®, to share the tools I learned with other women and young girls. In my upcoming novel, Almost Disappearing: Reclaiming the Territory of my Body, I will share these and many other memories with you.
What can you do as a mother, teacher or mentor to help girls develop a healthy relationship with food?

A Girl Carries her Mother's Body
I remembered shopping with my mother. All she could find were black dresses. Nothing colorful, pretty or sexy came in her size. I saw her pain. I counted calories.
I remembered my mother complaining about her body and warning me not to become fat like her. She was ashamed of her breasts and kept telling me that I could become like her if I didn't watch my weight.
I remembered going to my mom very proud of myself. "Look, mom, I've grown an inch!" I said. "If you keep growing like this, at the rate you are going, when you are my age, you will be as fat as me!" she replied.
I remembered that in my eyes this seemed to be a very big, very bad thing. Yet, I did not really think that my mother was that fat. But she did, and as a child I saw through her eyes. Even though I was always a skinny child, I began to feel fat.
I remembered these things during my Remembrance, the process of remembering the stolen, distorted and hidden parts of the Authentic Self. During my healing process I realized that I had a distorted image of my hips and my breasts, the two parts my mom complained the most about.
During my Remembrance Journey, I created the Beloved BodySoul System®, to share the tools I learned with other women and young girls. In my upcoming novel, Almost Disappearing: Reclaiming the Territory of my Body, I will share these and many other memories with you.

Food is the Gift of Life
It is curious that we only call "diet" the food regimes intended to help us reduce weight. Strictly speaking, a diet is your consistent eating pattern. We are all on a diet. The question is, I now know, whether we are on a healthy diet.
If the women around me had celebrated food as a source of health, beauty and power, I would have learned to receive food as a gift. I would not have made food my enemy if I had been shown each miraculous drop of life and power contained in food.
A key way to help your daughter's body image is by having a healthy relationship with your own body and with food.
Instead of counting calories and seeing food as an enemy, count power. What power is this particular food giving you? Rejecting food is rejecting life. Carbohydrates are not poison. They are your body's fuel. They give you the energy to keep going. Proteins give you strength and resistance. They help you construct your cells.
A healthy relationship with food, however, goes deeper than the nutrition charts. Food is the gift of life itself. It is a gift from Earth Mother. To know the power in each food is to know your power as a woman and as a child of Earth Mother.
I reclaimed my relationship with food and with Earth, and now I have Food Medicine and Earth Medicine. I help women and young girls heal their relationship with food and reconnect to Earth Mother. The process of how I transmuted this wound into my Medicine through the use of art is the core story of my upcoming novel, Almost Disappearing: Reclaiming the Territory of my Body, where I share these and many other memories. I created the Beloved BodySoul System®, to share the tools I learned with other women and young girls.

Your Body is your First Territory
My mother, like most women even today, obsessed about looking better without becoming aware of the truth experienced by her body. In no other realm do we allow ourselves such superficiality as an acceptable goal. To control the shape and appearance of the body, regardless of health, emotions or wellbeing is to empty out the substance of our body.
If my mother had sought to feel better and have a happier, fuller life inside her own body, I would have learned to seek that same feeling in my body.
One of the most shocking experiences I had during my first healing journeys was the discovery that I carried my mother's body, not mine.
I drew a picture of my body and everyone responded by letting me know that my body was not at all like the body I had drawn. Maria Mar, my shaman-teacher, who knew my mother, told me: "Corazon, this is not your body. It is your mother's body." This was a powerful blow to my entire bodysoul. I shed my first tears right there.
I began to reclaim my body, the first territory of my Self. Without this territory, I do not exist. I am invisible. That understanding led to the title of my upcoming novel, Almost Disappearing: Reclaiming the Territory of my Body, where I share these and many other memories. I created the Beloved BodySoul System®, to share the tools I learned with other women and young girls.
