Ana Danza is an orphan girl who becomes the apprentice to Forest Mother, a great alchemist and Wise Woman who is the Keeper of the Dream Forest. Ana is a unique, creative girl with magical powers. But she lives in the town of Reality, in the County of Ordinary, obsessed with ordinariness. Ana Danza has been rejected and mocked all her life. People treat her as a freak and the Town Mothers abuse her because she is an orphan.
Yet Forest Mother chooses her, and says that Ana has great potential. Ana is honored. She belongs to the Dream Forest, where its Elemental and magical creatures, from the Elm Prophets to the talking dragonflies, welcome and love her.
The abuse little Ana has suffered has left deep wounds in Ana Danza's psyche, however. She begins to hate the Realitians and her heart gets poisoned with bitterness and the desire to avenge her parents. Forest Mother doubts that Ana will pass the tests required to become a Keeper of the Forest. And if she doesn't, the Dream Forest may die, and so will everything else! Will the emotional wounds Ana Danza has suffered destroy her future, and the Dream Forest with her? Or will she learn how to transform her pain into power, becoming the next Keeper of the Dream Forest?

Once she discovers that Medicine, the girl can transform a Soul-starving patch into a Soul-nurturing patch for her Soul-nurturing Sarong. Will Ana complete the two Soul Sarongs in time?
