When I met Maria Mar what struck me most forcefully about Maria was a sense of her absolute authenticity and deep compassion and empathy, along with her wonderful sense of humor and uncompromising commitment to truth.

I met Maria at a time when I was wearing myself out doing work that I found very stimulating but also very compulsive as a feminist activist running an exciting project. The work was varied and broad enough that I had the impression of doing many different sorts of work although in fact none of it was creative work. Something inside me was drying up and getting burned out, to the point that I destroyed my health.

Maria opened my eyes to the effects on my life of the various wounds I have received and helped me to see the set of false beliefs I had evolved in response to them. She helped me identify and cultivate the inner allies who could support me in my inner journeying to find and heal old wounds. She gave me tools I could use with her but that would stay with me when she was no longer with me.

Maria and Corazon Tierra, who often worked with her and whose understanding is like an arrow that unfailingly finds its mark, helped me rebuild my relationship with my son by facing the effects my mothering had on him. We now have a relationship that is the envy of many people because we are so close and so happy to spend time together. We truly communicate the deepest things of the heart. My relationship with my daughter also benefited from their interaction with us.

Since working with Maria and Corazon I have been inspired to create from my gift for drawing portraits from life, a career that is a marriage between my political convictions and my creative passion. I have found something that feels like what I am meant to be doing: a means of speaking out about social justice through art.

My name is Ben and when I was younger I was blessed to be guided by Maria Mar. It was around puberty which as I remember was an extremely difficult time. Personally Maria's teachings were so deep, only now a, few years later do I see how much understanding of myself, myself with others, the shades and colors of a soul and being I had gained from this woman. I feel Maria has a great understanding of beings, which results in her non judgmental listening and advice I am grateful for her teachings. I want her to teach my children (when I get some).
