PBS-featured artist-shaman María Mar is an artist who integrates visual art, literature and performance to create interactive art experiences that change peoples' lives. She specializes in personal growth and women's empowerment through the arts.
You can enjoy her wise counsel, with tools and insights for women's lives, at a variety of media outlets, including her Spanish-language radio segment for women in Arizona, Cuerpo y Alma de Mujer, airing on 1190AM at 9:20am. She also has a monthly column at Alumbo! the self-help supersite, and contributes frequently to women's magazines and media.
As an artist, Maria is a performer, writer, visual artist and storyteller with more than 30 years of professional experience, and has been featured in radio, television, magazines, educational videos and other printed and online media. She is now the subject of a movie-documentary by award-winning filmmaker Kali Van Der Merwe. Maria has helped thousands of women in the USA and abroad using art for personal growth and women's empowerment.
As a shaman, Maria Mar is a Woman of Power. This means that she has transformed her pain into power, her emotional wounds into her Personal Medicine. She has trained for 14 intensive years in a full-time path to reclaim Female Wisdom. She has reclaimed the power of art as a ritual for individual and community transformation. Maria Mar walks her talk. Each book, digital product, performance or program she creates comes out of her own journey to freedom. She has worked, healed and addressed thousands of women in the USA, South Africa, Mexico and other countries.
Maria's passion is to empower women emotionally, spiritually, socially and financially. To achieve this, she uses interactive performances, lecture-performances and arts & crafts to guide women into transforming their own lives into masterful works of art. She offers women several life coaching solutions, building a step-by-step approach to releasing self-sabotage and manifesting your dreams, healing issues with money, success and power. Maria's performance "Love that Kills" --about violence
against women-- was featured in PBS, Channel 13, in "The
Americas Series" (1992). Maria has been featured in New York/Newsday
Manhattan Profile and other media. She is well-known as a pioneer in the use
of theatre for the
prevention of violence in the family and against women. Her methodology of
Theatre of Transformation was featured in Puro Teatro: A Latina
Anthology, published by the University of Arizona Press in 2000. Maria Mar combines her major in psychology from Fordham University and her vast theatre experience to offer art as a healing adventure. She has worked with institutions helping to empower women and to end violence in the family, such as Violence Intervention Program, Steps to End Family Violence and Roberto Clemente Family Guidance Clinic. She has performed in colleges and art venues such as Penn State University, Boricua College, Aaron Davis Hall, Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre, Nuyorican Poets Cafe and Pepatian, among others.
She has been featured in numerous radio stations, such as WKCR, WADO and WBAI. Maria Mar has worked with more than 70 organizations in the USA, Puerto Rico and South Africa and was the executive director of a non-profit, Ecuelecuá Interarts, for six years. She now offers her own Spanish talk radio segment, together with her apprentice and now creative/business partner, Corazon Tierra. Maria has addressed women issues in the United States, South Africa, Mexico and Puerto Rico, helping thousands of women heal from violence and oppression.
